How to Plant a Colorful Fall Mum Planter with Bulbs for Next Spring

September 5, 2016 by Sherry

What I would like to share with you today is a fall Mum planter, it will have Mums this fall and bulbs  blooming for you next spring. I had so much fun picking the bulbs and the mums and learning about how deep the bulbs need to be and how to choose a pot for you flowers.

If you live in a very cold part of the world Be sure to protect it from freezing it’s ok if it gets cold but I would bring your bulbs into the garage or protected porch it the temperature drops below 30.

I do have to give credit to my husband he has a degree in horticulture and has guided me along the way. So some of the information is what he has shared with me to make sure that I share with you the right way to plant the bulbs so you will have a beautiful show of color next spring.

I went to my local hardware store and purchased a packs of bulbs and I also coordinated the color of mum to the bulbs I have red mums with red tulips. I also used yellow mums with yellow daffodils.

I also purchased pots that were a little bigger than the pot my mums were in that way they had a little growing room and I had room for the bulbs. Here are a few of the pictures of just how I did my project. I think you can get the idea from the pictures.

Here I gathered up the supplies I would need to do my flower projects.

have small rocks for the bottom of the pot, and a pot big enough to hold both your mums and your bulbs. It has to be a deep pot.
Have you bulbs ready and be sure to read the directions each variety bulb may have a different level it will need to be planted.
Have you mums ready to plant
Be sure to use a good quality potting soil. This is what I used.

Next I started planting my bulbs. I read the direction on each package. Every one of them had a different depth to plant the bulbs.

First I put a little bit larger rock over the hole in my pot. This is so that your dirt doesn’t drain out when you water your flowers.
Then I added rocks all the way around the larger rock.
I made sure to read the directions for planting my bulbs. Every package I planted had a measuring bar on it so I could plant the bulbs at the right depth. It was actually on the other side of the directions.
My bulbs had to be 5 inches deep so I added soil to get the top of the soil 5 inches from the top. Then I planted my bulbs. be sure to plant the root side down and the point up.
When you take your mum out of the pot it is planted in the roots are packed in the pot. You should carefully loosen them so they will grow out ward and not get all balled up.
Loosen the roots so it looks like this.
Next plant your mums, be sure to lightly pack the dirt around your plant.

Here are a few of the Pots of Bulbs and Mums I planted this year. I’ll be sure to show you pictures of when the Bulbs bloom next spring.

Happy Fall!
