Have you ever run out of onion tops when you needed them most? I know I have. I would like to share with you today my little onion tops garden that sits right on my island. It has come in so handy by having fresh onion tops right at my fingertips.
Onions seem to be the one thing I always forget when I go to the grocery I have never been able to figure out why. I found a little idea several years ago at a nursery when I was looking for a few herbs. They had a pretty pot of flowers that was oblong that would fit great on my island. I just didn’t want flowers I wanted something I could use every day like herbs or my favorite onions.
The nursery had it to where you could just by the pot but any type of flower-pot could work. I have even seen pots that arrangements came in that could work nicely. I do have a flower arrangement in my living room that was an old ceramic soup pot and everyone that comes to my house just loves it. I broke the lid and was just before throwing it away when I decided to make it into a flower-pot. So glad that I did.
Here are the supplies you will need to make your counter top onion garden.
A ceramic pot or low bowl that will hold dirt and plants. Use your imagination and use what you like. The list is endless. I go to Goodwill and to garage sales every once in a while to try and find flower vases, old soup bowls the kind with a lid and spoon, like you would use for a holiday, flower arrangement pots. I make sure they don’t have a hole in the bottom, I want to water it and the water stay in the pot. I water it once the soil is dry to touch. I make sure not to over water it.
A good potting soil with organic fertilizer
A little diatomaceous earth to prevent bugs and nats
Onions from the grocery store be sure they have roots on them.
